Ken Herts has a distinguished track record of leadership in the newspaper, publishing and information services industries. He currently serves as the Chief Operating Officer of The Lenfest Institute for Journalism, a nonprofit dedicated to developing and supporting sustainable business models for local and metro journalism. The Institute, which is also the non- controlling parent company of The Philadelphia Inquirer, manages more than $120 million in assets with a lean team of just 15 employees.
Earlier in his career, Ken worked on more than $2 billion of acquisitions and divestitures, as Director of Financial Analysis for Dow Jones, and as a Managing Director at DeSilva+Phillips, a media-focused investment bank and part of Oaklins, a global network of more than 40 investment banks.
Ken spent a total of 29 years at Dow Jones, where he held multiple leadership, finance, product, and technology roles. As Vice President of Finance for Dow Jones’ Consumer Media Group, a billion-dollar business unit, he oversaw financial strategy for The Wall Street Journal, MarketWatch, Barron’s, and other flagship properties. He also served as Vice President & General Manager of Dow Jones Newswires, guiding the product strategy and operations of this real-time news business covering financial markets in more than 60 countries around the world.
Ken’s international experience includes being Publisher of The Wall Street Journal Europe, where he managed operations for a 100,000-circulation newspaper serving an international business audience in more than ten major European cities. He also ran technology and product development for Dow Jones Telerate, a fixed income and foreign exchange data and information provider, whose business is now part of the London Stock Exchange.
